Open Access Policy for The Journal of Korean History in East Asia

Preamble

The Journal of Korean History in East Asia is committed to the principles of open access and the widest possible dissemination of scholarly knowledge. This policy outlines the permitted uses of articles published in The Journal of Korean History in East Asia to ensure unrestricted access and promote the advancement of research.

Definition of Open Access

This journal adheres to the definition of open access as outlined by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), which defines open access as “free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself.” 1

Copyright and Licensing

The Center for Korean American and Korean Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, retains copyright of the original works published in The Journal of Korean History in East Asia. For translated reprints, The Center for Korean American and Korean Studies at the California State University, Los Angeles retain copyright only for the translated versions published in the journal.

Restrictions

The CC BY-ND license prohibits the following:

  • Derivative Works: Users may not distribute modified versions of the article.
  • Adaptations: Users may not create adaptations or transformations of the article.
  • No commercial use: Users cannot use the work for any purpose that generates direct commercial gain.

Attribution

Users must give appropriate credit to the original authors and the source, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made (although no changes to the content are permitted). This attribution should be provided in a manner that is reasonable to the medium or format employed.

Permitted Uses

Under this policy, users are explicitly permitted to:

  • Read, download, and print articles for personal or professional use.
  • Share articles with colleagues, students, or other interested parties.
  • Use articles in teaching, presentations, and other educational activities.
  • Include articles in institutional or subject-based repositories.
  • Index articles in databases and search engines.
  • Data mine and text mine articles for research purposes.

Exceptions

Exceptions to this policy may be granted in specific cases, such as:

  • Translations: Authors may authorize translations of their work.
  • Accessibility Adaptations: Adaptations for accessibility purposes may be permitted.
  • Prior Publication: Articles previously published under different licenses may be subject to those original terms.

Policy Review

This Open Access Policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect evolving best practices in open access publishing.
